Sarzana, (La Spezia). La prima notizia certa dell'esistenza di un insediamento sul colle di Sarzanello risale al 963 d.C. quando l'imperatore Ottone I di Sassonia riconosce ad Adalberto, vescovo di Luni, il possesso del castrum Sarzanae, un sito fortificato situato nel luogo dove oggi si trova la fortezza. Sull'identificazione del castrum vescovile con il luogo su cui sorgerà la fortezza non ci sono dubbi: è il Registrum Vetus di Sarzana, la più antica racconta di documenti del comune, a dirci che nel 1448 il castrum Sarzane “[…] nunc dicitur Sarzanellum […]” (ora è chiamato Sarzanello). La fortezza è conosciuta come forte di Castruccio ma, in realtà, il grande condottiero lucchese Castruccio Castracani degli Antelminelli si limitò ad utilizzare il castello di Sarzanello come residenza tra il 1317 e il 1328. La posizione strategica, dominante la pianura del fiume Magra, non poteva rimanere sprovvista di un presidio per il controllo di una così importante via di comunicazione tra nord e sud Italia. Con la vittoria nella guerra di Serezzana, resa dei conti delle aspirazioni fiorentine e genovesi sul territorio sarzanese, fu Lorenzo de' Medici a ordinare la costruzione della fortezza nella sua attuale forma: dopo la vittoria emerge la necessità di ristrutturare radicalmente l'apparato difensivo di Sarzana, luogo che per la signoria fiorentina funge da cuscinetto, atto a contenere le pressioni dei nemici posti a nord. Il progetto viene affidato ad un'equipe capitanata dall'architetto Francesco di Giovanni detto “il Francione”, a cui viene affidata anche la ristrutturazione della vecchia fortezza, detta Firmafede, nel centro storico di Sarzana, i cui lavori terminano nel 1492. Nella metà del 1493, la stessa equipe di esperti, mette mano anche alla fortezza di Sarzanello e si procede alla demolizione del vecchio cassero medievale. Il cantiere viene sospeso nel novembre 1494, a causa degli sconvolgimenti conseguenti alla discesa del sovrano francese Carlo VIII, sceso in Italia per conquistare il Regno di Napoli. I lavori riprendono nel 1496 quando il Banco di San Giorgio di Genova diviene il nuovo proprietario della città di Sarzana e porta a termine il progetto fiorentino. Nel settembre 1502 la fortezza può dirsi terminata. L'impianto fortificato non è stato mai coinvolto in eventi bellici di grande portata e questo spiega in buona parte come sia potuto giungere ai giorni nostri mantenendo il suo aspetto originario quasi intatto.
