The monastery was established already in 1352 by the Count of Lecce and the Duke of Athens, Walter VI of Brienne. This complex, given from the beginning to Celestine, was located in the area occupied today by the castle. In 1549, in fact, in an effort to expand the walls of Charles V and to build a new fortress, the convent was demolished and Celestine settled on its current site.
The new complex was built in 1549, designed by Riccardi, who was responsible for the original site of the attached cloister and the Basilica of Santa Croce.
The major works were carried out in 600. The long façade (1659-1695) was the work of two architects Lecce, Joseph Zimbalo and Giuseppe Cino, who built the first and to the second order.
The orders of the facade are scores vertically by pilasters. The prospectus is arricchito two loggias on either side, numerous windows are decorated with elaborate moldings and a frieze decorated with heraldic shields. The main entrance, at the center, is decorated with cherubs and bunches of fruit.
After the suppression of the orders, which took place in 1807, the monastery became the Government Palace. It now houses the offices of the Prefecture and the Province.
