La Società Anonima Moto Guzzi venne fondata a Genova il 15 marzo 1921 dal cavaliere Emanuele Vittorio Parodi e da suo figlio Giorgio assieme all'amico Carlo Guzzi. La sede produttiva invece fu stabilita a Mandello Tonzanico... poi diventato Mandello del Lario in provincia di Lecco. Come simbolo venne scelta un'aquila... simbolo del Corpo Aeronautico nella Prima Guerra Mondiale... in onore del loro comune amico e che doveva essere il quarto socio Giovanni Ravelli... pilota motociclistico ed aviatore... che però era venuto a mancare nel 1919 cadendo con il suo aereo durante un volo di collaudo. La Moto Guzzi costruì il modello Le Mans dal 1976 al 1993 in 4 serie. Mentre le prime 3 avevano il motore di 843 cm3 la 4° serie... denominata Le Mans 1000... aveva il motore di 949 cm3. Il modello Le Mans II fu costruito dal 1978 al 1981 e visivamente si distingue dalla precedente 1° serie principalmente dal posizionamento delle pinze dei freni anteriori che sono disposte posteriormente alle forcelle della sospensione anteriore mentre nella 1° serie erano posizionate anteriormente a codesta. Il motore è il classico bicilindrico a V di 90° di 843 cm3 disposto longitudinalmente che nella versione stradale erogava 71 cavalli di potenza mentre nelle versioni preparate per le competizioni... come quella qui raffigurata... erogava una potenza che partiva da 82 cavalli a salire. In origine... questo motore a V di 90°...che era stato progettato dall'ingegnere Giulio Cesare Carcano nel 1959 con una cilindrata di 594 cm3 e 34 cavalli di potenza... era stato presentato alla Fiat come propulsore alternativo per motorizzare la Nuova 500 ma poi gli venne preferito il più economico e meno performante bicilindrico twin di 479 cm3 erogante inizialmente 13 cavalli di potenza massima e costruito dalla stessa Fiat. La Le Mans II visibile in questa fotografia fu allestita dal preparatore e pilota... specializzato in Moto Guzzi di cui era pure concessionario... Sergio "Zigolo" Valentini di Forlì mentre il pilota che la portava in gara era Paolo Ferrari... vincitore di molte competizioni nella categoria Endurance.

The cardan transmission was a consequence of the initial design for which this engine wanted to be intended.
Effectly... for a sporty use... and with the techniques of the time... it was a bit penalising but offered very low maintenance and rear wheel always and perfectly aligned.
In those years I owned a Moto Guzzi 850 California and for a touring model the final cardan transmission was an excellent solution also for cleaning... which could not be offered by a chain drive... especially if you ran into a thunderstorm for a long time.
