La trasmissione cardanica era una conseguenza del progetto iniziale a cui questo motore voleva essere destinato. Effettivamente... per un utilizzo sportivo... e con le tecniche dell'epoca... era un po' penalizzante ma offriva bassissima manutenzione e ruota posteriore sempre e perfettamente allineata. Dalla fine degli anni '70 (dello scorso secolo)... e per un po' di anni... ho posseduto una Moto Guzzi 850 California e posso affermare che in una motocicletta per un utilizzo turistico la trasmissione finale cardanica era... e probabilmente è ancora... un'ottima soluzione anche per la pulizia... cosa che non poteva essere offerta da una trasmissione a catena... specialmente se si incappava in un temporale per lungo tempo. A metà degli anni '70 (sempre dello scorso secolo) venne commercializzata la MV Agusta 750 America che era dotata di un motore a 4 cilindri in linea e trasmissione finale con albero cardanico. Tale trasmissione... in diversi esemplari... fu trasformata a catena come nella versione maggiorata 1000 Agostini... dalla Arturo Magni... un'azienda sita a Samarate in provincia di Varese... mentre nelle Moto Guzzi tale trasformazione era problematica.
