Specie monotipica recentemente riconosciuta come specie separata da R. greca Boulenger, 1891, grazie a studi morfologici su adulti e larve (Dubois, 1987; Grillitsch et al., 1993; Picariello et al., 1996) e biochimici (Picariello et al., 1990). Per l'aspetto generale e la colorazione ricorda molto la rana greca, ma appare leggermente più tozza. Testa con muso piuttosto corto ed arrotondato. Distanza tra le narici maggiore di quella tra la narice e l'occhio. Occhi a pupilla orizzontale. Timpano non prominente e poco evidente. Denti vomerini presenti. Parte posteriore della lingua, libera e biforcuta. Omosterno e sterno ossificati. Pelle liscia con piccole verruche granulari e pliche dorsolaterali ben evidenti. Colorazione delle parti superiori molto variabile: dal grigio bruno, al grigio olivastro, a bruno giallastro, a bruno rossiccio e marrone. La "maschera" scura, estesa dalle narici attraverso occhio e timpano, termina assottigliandosi presso la fine della mascella. Sulla colorazione di fondo possono essere presenti varie macchiette più scure ed alcune macchie biancastre a forma di lichene sfumate di bruno o rossastro. Sulle zampe è visibile una striatura scura marcata. Zone inferiori del corpo biancastre o color crema, con gola e parte del petto screziati di scuro.
