Forse in molti non sanno che in Sicilia esiste una minoranza etnica e linguistica lombarda: un gruppo consistente di persone che non parla la lingua siciliana, che vive nell'isola e che ha una storia antichissima che proviene da altre regioni d'Italia. I Lombardi di Sicilia sono una minoranza originaria dell'Italia nord-occidentale, che vive ancora oggi in alcuni Comuni della Sicilia centrale e della Sicilia orientale. Ci si riferisce alle loro comunità come 'Lombardia siciliana' o 'Sicilia lombarda'. Il termine lombardo non si riferisce alla regione Lombardia ma è da considerarsi come termine usato nel medio evo per indicare gli abitanti di un territorio molto più vasto dell'attuale regione Lombardia, che comprendeva tutta l'Italia settentrionale, esclusa forse la Romagna. L'origine della presenza di abitanti originari dell'Italia settentrionale in Sicilia risale a quando i Normanni cominciarono ad espandersi in Italia meridionale a partire dalla prima metà dell'XI° secolo: in cambio dell'aiuto del Papa, promisero che se avessero conquistato la Calabria bizantina e la Sicilia islamica, si sarebbero impegnati a ristabilire il rito latino e l'egemonia di Roma sulle diocesi del sud Italia. In questo contesto si inserisce l'insediamento di genti provenienti dal nord Italia voluto dal papato e dai Normanni. L'arrivo di questi nuclei implementarono i primi nuclei “lombardi” precedenti, risalenti al 1040 circa e giunti in Sicilia come mercenari, rafforzando la chiesa di Roma e il governo normanno con genti di indiscussa fedeltà. I Comuni dove è maggiormente riscontrabile ancora oggi una forte eredità lombarda sono Nicosia, Sperlinga, Piazza Armerina e Aidone in provincia di Enna, San Fratello, Acquedolci, San Piero Patti, Montalbano Elicona, Novara di Sicilia, Fondachelli-Fantina, in provincia di Messina. Tuttavia i sei principali e più conservati centri della minoranza linguistica gallo-italico restano Nicosia, Piazza Armerina, Aidone, Sperlinga, San Fratello e Novara di Sicilia, che pertanto si caratterizzano per la loro parlata alloglotta gallo-italico. La parlata gallo-italico viene ancora usata nei rapporti interpersonali a Nicosia, Sperlinga, San Fratello e Novara di Sicilia.
