La tangara olivacea pileata è una specie endemica della Costa Rica e del Panama occidentale, dove vive nelle foreste montane umide tra i 1600 e i 2100 metri s.l.m.. Ha testa nera con lungo sopracciglio bianco, gola grigio-bianca, dorso giallo olivastro e parti inferiori gialle e grigio-biancastre. Si nutre sia di piccoli insetti che di frutta. Si trova in coppia o, durante la riproduzione, in piccoli stormi di un massimo di sei individui. Ricerca il cibo saltando lungo i rami ricoperti di muschio e tra i cespugli, frugando tra i licheni e le bromelie, con un comportamento irrequieto e molto attivo, agitando abitualmente le ali e la coda, ed essendo talvolta molto confidente, come in questo caso. Stato di conservazione: non minacciato, anche se la deforestazione ha sensibilmente ridotto il suo habitat. Un tempo la specie veniva compresa nella famiglia Thraupidae, ma attualmente si ritiene prossimo al genere Arremonops (Passerellidae). Parco nazionale Los Quetzales, Provincia di San José, Costarica.
