Il lupo grigio appenninico (Canis lupus italicus Altobello, 1921) è una sottospecie del lupo grigio indigeno della penisola italiana, ma ormai diffuso stabilmente anche in buona parte della Francia. È stato tolto dall'elenco delle specie nocive dal 1971, col d.m. 23 luglio 1971 (c.d. decreto “Natali”), quando la popolazione si era ridotta a solo 70-110 esemplari in alcune aree isolate dell'Appennino. Grazie alla tutela, dagli anni novanta del secolo scorso, l'areale del lupo grigio appenninico si è espanso occupando dapprima tutte le zone montuose degli Appennini, quindi le Alpi Occidentali e successivamente la Francia meridionale e sudorientale, la Svizzera e la Spagna nord orientale.
