Il Black-and-white Owl (Strix nigrolineata) è un grande gufo che vive nei terreni alberati e nelle foreste delle pianure tropicali, dal Messico centrale fino al Perù e al Venezuela. È lungo dai 35 ai 40 cm. Ha parti superiori marrone scuro o nerastre, parti inferiori bianche con strette barre scure, testa arrotondata con prominente disco facciale scuro delineato da sopracciglia bianche maculate e occhi scuri. In contrasto con il piumaggio non colorato, le zampe e il becco sono di colore arancione brillante. I due sessi sono simili, le femmine tendono ad essere più grandi dei maschi. Sono uccelli monogami e sedentari, spesso osservati in coppia. Le loro prede sono principalmente grandi insetti volanti e pipistrelli. È una specie notturna che durante il giorno rimane ben nascosta vicino ai tronchi degli alberi, ben al di sopra del suolo; le coppie spesso rimangono appollaiate insieme, come in questa foto.
