Palazzo dei Papi è uno dei monumenti più importanti della città di Viterbo, situato a fianco del Duomo. La Curia Pontificia fu trasferita a Viterbo nel 1257 da Alessandro IV, a causa dell'ostilità del comune romano e delle continue violenze urbane: l'ex palazzo vescovile di Viterbo fu ampliato per fornire ai Papi una adeguata residenza. La costruzione, voluta dal "Capitano del popolo" Raniero Gatti, prevedeva una grande sala delle udienze comunicante con una loggia rialzata su volta a botte sopra la via cittadina. All'interno della loggia si trova una fontana quattrocentesca, realizzata con materiali di varie epoche, recante lo stemma della famiglia Gatti.
