Si tratta della galassia di grandi dimensioni più vicina alla nostra, la Via Lattea; è visibile anche a occhio nudo ed è tra gli oggetti più lontani visibili senza l'ausilio di strumenti. La Galassia di Andromeda è la più grande del Gruppo Locale, un gruppo di galassie di cui fanno parte anche la Via Lattea e la Galassia del Triangolo, più circa cinquanta altre galassie minori, molte delle quali satelliti delle principali.
