Appartenente alla famiglia Apidae, è un insetto impollinatore specialmente delle orchidee selvatiche, lungo 25-30 mm. si nutre di nettare e polline, il nome "legnaiola" deriva dal fatto che scava le sue tane nel legno morbido, dove la femmina costruisce poche celle e in ognuna di esse depone un uovo e una riserva di polline e nettare. Non è aggressiva, anche se a vederla con la sua mole e colore può incutere un po' di timore e, la sua eventuale puntura è molto meno pericolosa di quella delle vespe.
