Fin dalla sua apertura, nel 1905, il Bristol è stato considerato uno dei più prestigiosi hotel della città: la buona società di Genova lo scelse come sofisticata cornice per feste leggendarie e come ristorante esclusivo. Location di grande fascino, attrasse ospiti illustri come Gabriele d'Annunzio, Luigi Pirandello e l'imperatore Hirohito. La sua nomea non lo preservò dai rovesci della storia: durante la Seconda Guerra Mondiale il comando tedesco vi installò il suo quartier generale, costruendo un tunnel segreto fino al porto di Genova, mentre al termine del conflitto il Comitato Italiano di Liberazione dell'Alta Italia ne fece la propria sede.
