Castello di Pietrarubbia comprendente anche il borgo di Pietrarubbia è uno dei più antichi (se non il più antico in assoluto) dell'intero Montefeltro, con le sue origini che possono essere datate attorno all'anno 1000 (numerose fonti citano un documento, datato 962 d.C., con il quale l'Imperatore Ottone avrebbe concesso in feudo a Ulderico di Carpegna il borgo, ma da altre parti esso viene considerato un falso accertato; la tradizione popolare ne anticipa le origini addirittura al V secolo d.C). Quello che è sicuramente certo è che il borgo apparteneva ai Conti di Carpegna già nel 1137, ed era dotato di un'imponente Castello che sorgeva su di una roccia di pietra rossa (da cui deriva il nome petra rubea, poi divenuto Pietrarubbia) a picco sulla vallata sottostante, caratterizzato da ottime difese naturali tanto da essere poi denominato “castrum inexpugnabile”.
