La Torre d'Amont ed i resti murari che la attorniano (si trova su un promontorio all'inizio della Valle del Frejus), sono quanto rimane della torre maggiore dell'antico castello dei Signori di Bardonecchia (famiglia De Bardonisca) risalente probabilmente al XII o XIII secolo. Sembra destituita da ogni fondamento storico la denominazione "Torre Saracena" con cui viene chiamata da alcuni valligiani, pur se nel territorio della Valle di Rochemolles esistono reperti risalenti all'invasione dei Saraceni che arrivarono sino in questi luoghi.
Bardonecchia, che esisteva già al tempo dei Romani, nel 1503 entra a far parte del feudo Brianzonese, il quale nel 1343 diventò repubblica indipendente divisa in cinque escartons, di cui uno appunto comprendeva Bardonecchia. Col trattato di Utrecht gli escartons con deflusso delle acque verso l'Italia furono riuniti alla Savoia.
Durante le guerre di religione francesi Bardonecchia fu teatro di un sanguinoso scontro fra le parti avverse. Nel 1562, dopo una serie di scontri seguenti la devastazione della prevostura di Oulx, avvenuta il 22 luglio, da parte di un cospicuo contingente di valdesi, un gruppo di questi venne spinto dalle truppe cattoliche al comando di Claude Arlaud Borel detto La Casette, a rifugiarsi in Bardonecchia. Qui la maggior parte di loro (tra i duecento ed i quattrocento) soccombette mentre i rimanenti (circa 150) si rifugiarono nella fortificazione Tour d'Aumont da dove vennero snidati con il fuoco dal La Casette e trucidati.
