vespa mammut ( Megascolia maculata ) è una vespa molto grande (la più grande in Europa), con la femmina che arriva fino a 6 centimetri, mentre il maschio è più piccolo. La specie può essere osservata nella stagione calda, da maggio a settembre. La vespa mammut assomiglia a un calabrone molto grande e allungato. La femmina è più grande del maschio e ha una testa gialla, il maschio ha una testa nera. Il suo corpo è coperto di peli lanuginosi ed è di colore nero lucido con due fasce gialle sull'addome che a volte sono divise per formare quattro macchie gialle. Le vespe mammut adulte si nutrono di nettare dai fiori. Spesso sono stati associati al carciofo selvatico. La femmina caccia le larve dei grossi coleotteri che paralizza pungendole e poi depone un singolo uovo sulla larva.
