Il Battistero di Firenze fu consacrato nel 1059 e venne intitolato a San Giovanni Battista, patrono di Firenze. I lavori iniziarono intorno al IV secolo dopo Cristo, sulle rovine di una domus romana. La struttura venne rimaneggiata diverse volte, venne consacrata il 6 novembre 1059 da Papa Niccolò II, al secolo Gerardo di Borgogna. Nel 1128 divenne ufficialmente il Battistero di Firenze e nei decenni successivi vennero realizzati il rivestimento marmoreo esterno, il pavimento a intarsi di marmo e la cupola, completata a metà del XIII secolo. Successivamente vennero realizzati i mosaici dell'abside e i complessi mosaici della cupola, con la collaborazione di Coppo di Marcovaldo e Cimabue. Le porte in bronzo La prima delle porte in bronzo venne realizzata negli anni '30 del Trecento da Andrea Pisano su commissione della potente Arte di Calimala, che aveva il compito di tutelare il Battistero. La seconda porta venne realizzata invece da Lorenzo Ghiberti nei primi decenni del Quattrocento, vincitore di un concorso a cui parteciparono anche altri celebri artisti, tra cui Filippo Brunelleschi. La terza porta, detta Porta del Paradiso, è interamente dorata e venne realizzata sempre da Ghiberti negli anni dal 1425 al 1452. L'iconografia delle tre porte di bronzo racconta attraverso i rilievi delle formelle, come in una gigantesca Bibbia illustrata, le Storie dell'Antico Testamento (Porta Est), le storie di San Giovanni Battista (Porta Sud) e infine le Storie di Cristo, o del Nuovo Testamento (Porta Nord). Le scene delle porte del Battistero, in particolare quelle della Porta del Paradiso, propongono una scultura di grande modernità e vitalità, realizzata con soluzioni prospettiche virtuose e impressionanti. Ai lati della Porta del Paradiso ci sono due colonne di porfido, donate dai pisani ai fiorentini, per l'aiuto militare fornito loro nel 1117 nella difesa della città dai Lucchesi. La Cattedrale di Santa Maria del Fiore è una imponente Chiesa in stile gotico costruita sul sito dove si ergeva l'antica cattedrale di Firenze, la Chiesa di Santa Reparata, i cui resti sono visibili nella cripta. La cattedrale fu iniziata alla fine del XIII secolo da Arnolfo di Cambio, mentre la bellissima cupola di Filippo Brunelleschi fu aggiunta nel XV secolo. La chiesa è alta 114 m. La costruzione inizia il 9 settembre 1296 e viene completa nel 1471. La cupola e le porte bronzee, furono completate rispettivamente nel 1887 e nel 1903. Vi lavorarono architetti del calibro e della fama di : Filippo Brunelleschi, Arnolfo di Cambio, Francesco Talenti, Bernardo Rossellino La chiesa fu consacratata quando la facciata era ancora da terminare. La facciata è ricoperta di marmi color rosa, bianco e verde. L' interno della cattedrale, in contrasto, è piuttosto austero. L'esterno è decorate con un mix di marmi rosa, bianchi e verde. L'interno, in contrasto, è molto meno decorata, sembra quasi vuota quando appena entri ma ogni singola parte ha il suo perchè. Vedete i pavimenti in mosaico nella foto qui sopra?
