Il Castello di Lonato, comunemente denominato Rocca, si erge sulla sommità di uno dei rilievi dell'anfiteatro morenico che domina, da un lato, la parte meridionale del lago di Garda e, dall'altro, il centro storico del paese che si estende fino a lambire le prime terre della Pianura Padana. La fortificazione, destinata prettamente ad esigenze di ordine militare e difensivo, si presenta come una delle più imponenti di tutta la Lombardia; la sua pianta irregolare rivela infatti una struttura lunga quasi 180 metri e larga mediamente 45 metri. Due sono i corpi che, a livelli differenti, la compongono: la Rocchetta nella parte più alta e, più in basso, quello che è denominato il Quartiere Principale. Nonostante la dominazione dei Visconti e degli Scaligeri, l'intero complesso, composto da grossi ciottoli morenici, presenta una merlatura di tipologia guelfa, frutto sicuramente di restauri eseguiti nel corso del tempo. Al Castello si accede dal suo lato meridionale tramite una porta ed un ponte levatoio cui si giunge percorrendo i viali e i percorsi pedonali del grande parco che collega la Casa del Podestà alla Rocca. Le sale della Casa del Capitano nella Rocchetta ospitano il Museo Civico Ornitologico la cui collezione deriva dalle raccolte dell'ornitologo Gustavo Adolfo Carlotto (1886-1970). I circa settecento esemplari rappresentano in maniera pressoché completa l'avifauna italiana e il loro notevole stato di conservazione si deve agli interventi di Marco Gianese, tassidermista di fama, che si dedicò alla loro imbalsamazione.
