Nato a San Donà di Piave il 4 aprile del 1940, figlio di un giardiniere e nipote di un vivaista. Comincia, da bambino, a fare i primi passi come scultore. Già all'età di 5 anni, lavorava il legno e modellava la creta, per realizzare i pastori. Da ragazzo, poi, ha frequentato la scuola d'arte a Venezia ma contemporaneamente si è occupato di meccanica e per mantenersi agli studi ha lavorato nelle botteghe, dove ha imparato a lavorare il legno e a restaurare gli oggetti antichi. Nelle botteghe perfeziona la tecnica dell'intaglio del legno per il ripristino di antiche sculture, ma la sua vocazione per l'arte, insieme ad una innata curiosità, lo spingeranno nel 1963 lontano da Venezia alla ricerca di un nuovo luogo dove poter finalizzare le proprie aspettative di artista. Si tratterà di Roma, dove aprirà la bottega di Via dei pianellari 14 in cui tutt'ora opera. Nel settembre 2015 vede la luce la Fondazione Luigina e Ferdinando Codognotto: esposizione dei lavori più celebri e allestimento di laboratori per i "ragazzi che hanno voglia di scoprire come lavorare il legno". La Fondazione è ospitata in locali poco distanti dalla bottega in Via dei Pianellari. E' uno degli esponenti più importanti nel panorama culturale mondiale. Le sue opere lignee sono presenti in collezioni pubbliche e private in Europa, nelle Americhe e in Giappone.
