Una bellissima storia è legata a questo fiore, e narra l'origine del nome di “occhi della Madonna“ Di Virgilio Chiesa tratto da L'anima del villaggio, Gaggini, Lugano 1934. Una dolce mattina, nel Malcantone, discese la Madonna col bambino, per godersi la nostra primavera. La Madonna passeggiava lungo un sentierino pianeggiante, invigilando il figlioletto, che correva felice tra l'erba e i fiori. Dopo un po', il piccolo Gesù ebbe sete e domandò da bere. La madre si guardò attorno, tese l'orecchio, ma non scorreva un filo d'acqua. Già stava per prendersi in braccio la sua creaturina e risalire ai cieli, quando le si offerse allo sguardo un bianco fiorellino che, all'ombra d'un blocco erratico, quasi non osava mostrarsi. La Madonna s'avvicinò all'intirizzito fiore, lo colse e vide dentro quel pallore una gocciola di rugiada, che sprizzò una luce di diamante. Accostò la corolla a mo' di minuscola coppa alle labbrucce del piccolo, perché sorbissero quella stilla. Gesù bambino s'ebbe spenta la sete e riprese le sue corserelle nei prati. La Vergine confortò d'uno sguardo il povero fiore, che abbandonava il capino sullo stelo. Lo riportò all'ombra del masso, riattaccandolo miracolosamente al gambo. Tosto la corolla si drizzò e divenne azzurrina come l'iride della Madonna, cui aveva per un istante fissato. E tutti i fiori di quella specie, tinsero i bianchi petali di delicato azzurro. Da allora, nel Malcantone, le veroniche sono chiamate “occhietti della Madonna”; guardano a primavera dalle siepi, dai margini dei ruscelli, dalle prode, fiori sacri all'alma madre dei cieli.
