La calla è una pianta di facile adattabilità a diverse condizioni climatiche. La sua flessibilità dipende dalle numerose varietà disponibili e dagli ibridi realizzati nel corso del tempo. La calla, infatti, grazie a numerosi processi di ibridazione, può resistere sia al caldo che al freddo. Per una coltivazione ottimale, bisogna però conoscerne le caratteristiche botaniche e colturali. Acquisirete tutte le conoscenze necessarie leggendo i singoli contenuti della nostra sezione. Intanto diciamo subito che la calla è una pianta originaria delle zone sub tropicali ed equatoriali. Il suo paese di origine è l'Africa meridionale. La pianta appartiene al genere Zantedeschia e alla famiglia delle Araceae. In Europa, la pianta venne importata a metà del 1700, ma venne classificata solo un secolo più tardi dal botanico italiano Francesco Zantedeschi, da cui deriva proprio il nome del genere di appartenenza della calla. Questa pianta non va però confusa con una pianta palustre chiamata aro acquatico e appartenente al genere Calla. La pianta, botanicamente chiamata calla di palude o calla palustris, è una pianta con origini ed esigenze colturali completamente differenti dalla calla appartenente al genere Zantedeschia.
