La Basilica di San Lorenzo Maggiore La basilica fu costruita tra la fine del IV e l'inizio del V secolo. La data esatta è incerta, così come il nome di chi l'ha commissionata e le circostanze della sua fondazione. Secondo alcuni studiosi San Lorenzo fu eretto in coincidenza con la "Basilica Portiana", che fu costruita dall'Augusto d'Occidente ( Valentiniano I o Valentiniano II ) per compiacere il vescovo di Milano Auxenzio (355-372) dell'Ariano la fede . Se questo fosse vero, San Lorenzo avrebbe preceduto la fondazione delle quattro basiliche ambrosiane.
