Per fotografare questo splendido strigide sono uscito per tre giorni prima dell'alba ad esplorare a lungo i boschi attorno alla Pousada Piuval. Fortunatante l'ultimo giorno sono riuscito ad avvistarne uno appollaiato su un alto ramo, prima del sorgere del sole. Giusto il tempo di fare due o tre scatti che ha aperto le ali ed è volato via, silenzioso come un fantasma. Un incontro davvero emozionante. Un tempo considerato cospecifico con il gufo reale, il gufo della Virginia è il più grande gufo del continente americano, arrivando ai 60 cm con un'apertura alare di 152 cm. Caratterizzato dai grandi ciuffi auricolari, da cui il nome inglese di Great Horned Owl. Vive in gran parte delle Americhe, dall'Alaska all'Argentina. Se ne conoscono 15 sottospecie che differiscono per il colore del piumaggio. Nel Pantanal vive ai margini delle capões, le isole arboree delle pianure, dove ha un'ampia vista sui suoi terreni di caccia. Le sue prede preferite sono i piccoli mammiferi, soprattutto roditori, ma caccia anche uccelli acquatici, perfino aironi. È attivo soprattutto al crepuscolo e nelle ore notturne. Stato di conservazione non minacciato (LC), è abbastanza diffuso ma con popolazioni di bassa densità. Pantanal, Luglio 2019.
