Dopo giorni di cammino su quel ghiaccio lucido, muoversi è ormai diventata cosa agevole. Non mi riesce di alzare lo sguardo, rapito come sono dalle ragnatele che questa natura ostile si è divertita a disegnare nelle profondità blu del lago. Ed ecco che, come un insetto intrappolato nell'ambra, mi si materializza un'immagine che mai avrei pensato di poter testimoniare: mi ritrovo a fotografare una fotografia! Infatti è stata proprio la natura a fermare quell'incredibile momento per raccontarmi un qualcosa di crudo ed estremamente raro. La storia del Lago Baikal è chiaramente racchiusa sotto i miei piedi: è inizio inverno nella lontana Siberia, le temperature sono in picchiata e il lago più profondo che esista è irrequieto. I venti spaventosi cominciano a dipingere le scogliere e le isole sparse qua e là con pennellate glaciali di un azzurro a volte intenso, altre volte opalino. Fa sempre più freddo e le acque cominciano a immobilizzarsi mentre le creature del lago si preparano a un lungo periodo sotto uno spesso strato di vetro. Non questo piccolo pesce però, che per colpa di un'ingenuità fa capolino nel momento sbagliato e rimane intrappolato, inerme. Non importa quanto cerchi di dimenarsi, l'infausto inverno siberiano lo condanna. Fissando quella creatura mi sembra di poter percepire lo sguardo impaurito dell'umanità e l'impotenza dinnanzi a un qualcosa di immensamente più grande e fuori controllo. La primavera arriverà, inesorabile, e quel pesce tornerà finalmente a farsi cullare dalle correnti del suo amato lago, per l'eternità.
