Con queste parole Agnolo di Tura celebra nelle cronache del 1325 l'inizio dei lavori che dettero vita alla torre del Mangia: non tutti sanno che con i suoi 88 metri misurati sugli ultimi merli, quella senese è tra le torri civiche più alte d'Italia dopo il Torrazzo di Cremona, la torre degli Asinelli di Bologna e la torre d'Arnolfo a Firenze e che, nonostante si elevi da una quota assai inferiore, essa raggiunge ma non supera il campanile del Duomo!
