Dal mio alloggio a Sauze d'Oulx (TO) vedo di fronte a me il Monte Chaberton, un'imponente vetta di oltre 3mila metri che fu fortificata all'inizio dello scorso secolo con una batteria di cannoni montati su torri di cemento. Non so perché ma lo Chaberton esercita su di me un enorme fascino, e la visita della sommità è una esperienza davvero interessante; impressionante pensare ai militari che in inverno si recavano alla Batteria con equipaggiamenti pesanti, e le grosse matasse di filo spinato che si incontrano sui pendii prossimi alla vetta testimoniano i periodi bellici di cui questo quieto monte è stato protagonista. Riporto di seguito alcune informazioni relative ad esso. Il monte Chaberton (3.130 metri) è una montagna delle Alpi Cozie situata nel dipartimento francese delle Alte Alpi. Data la sua posizione eminente, pressoché inespugnabile, e la sua vicinanza al confine francese, il monte ebbe sempre notevole importanza strategica. Per questo motivo, tra fine XIX secolo ed inizio XX secolo vi fu costruita un'opera fortificata, la cosiddetta Batteria dello Chaberton, che ebbe un ruolo attivo nella guerra tra Italia e Francia del 1940. La vetta fu pesantemente modificata nel corso dei lavori di costruzione della batteria fortificata, presentandosi oggi come un'ampia spianata, raggiunta dall'antica strada militare di servizio.
