Particolare della grande cisterna dell'accampamento può senza dubbio considerarsi uno tra i più spettacolari monumenti di Albano e del mondo romano.La cisterna fu progettata e fatta costruire dagli architetti ( praefecti fabrum) della Legione per poter rifornire d'acqua l'accampamento e le abitazioni che gravavano intorno ad esso. La cisterna è stata realizzata in parte scavando direttamente il banco roccioso e in parte in muratura. Essa è divisa in 5 navate con volta a botte sostenute da 36 pilastri ed è rivestita da intonaco impermeabile ( opus signinum). L'importanza dei Cisternoni di Albano deriva non solo dalla loro dimensione, che permette di immagazzinare più di 10.000 metri cubi di acqua,ma soprattutto dal fatto che, dopo quasi duemila anni, ancora funzionano perfettamente, alimentati da condotte romane che captano le acque da sorgenti poste lungo i fianchi del cratere vulcanico del lago di Albano. ( P.s. lo scatto è stato eseguito durante il periodo in cui i cisternoni erano stati svuotati per manutenzione.)
