il capoluogo dell'isola di Curacao, Antille Olandesi, esattamente la C delle tre isole comunemente note come isole ABC, dove A sta per Aruba e B per Bonaire. La foto raffigura il ponte della regina Emma, un'opera ingegneristica storica, essendo ponte mobile su barconi. Al passaggio di qualche grossa nave il ponte viene letteralmente traslato su un fianco, in un'operazione che dura pochi minuti. Una città insolitamente gradevole e di apparente benessere, nonostante la distanza ravvicinatissima con le coste del Venezuela e con la capitale Caracas di quella grande nazione sudamericana. Vi si parlano comunemente, perchè insegnate nelle scuole, tre lingue ufficiali: l'olandese (visto che è territorio della corona dei Paesi Bassi), inglese e Papiamento, una stranissima lingua locale che contiene vocaboli di tante lingue del mondo, diverso dal creolo parlato altrove tra le isole caraibiche.
