Un camino che colpisce per l'imponenza e per la ricchezza dei suoi marmi e delle sue pietre preziose ma soprattutto per la sua straordinaria storia. Completamente ripulito, oggi risulta quasi brillare agli occhi dei visitatori nel circuito di visita dei Musei Reali al termine di un restauro durato tre mesi. Ma non è possibile riaccenderlo. Al suo cospetto (fin dal 1661, quando venne assemblato nel salone principale e di ingresso della reggia dall'architetto Bernardino Quadri) si sono scaldate generazioni di guardie svizzere, che per secoli hanno svolto il loro compito di custodia nei confronti dei duchi, e poi dei re, che si sono susseguiti. Le fiamme che ardevano all'interno della bocca di fuoco, giorno e notte senza interruzione durante i mesi invernali, sono state la prima immagine di tutti gli ospiti che accedevano alle sale di Palazzo Reale. Re, imperatori, ambasciatori. Protagonista quindi di gran parte della storia torinese, dalla Madama Reale Giovanna Battista a Maria Josè. Testimone silenzioso dell'intera epopea risorgimentale. Il restauro è stato possibile grazie a una sponsorizzazione privata. Fondaco Italia, realtà che mette in contatto le esigenze museali e artistiche con il mondo imprenditoriale, ha permesso a Palazzetti, storica azienda produttrice di camini e stufe di Pordenone, di finanziare l'intervento con 35 mila euro.
