La scultura in bronzo, nota come "Il Sogno della Morte", venne realizzata nel 1890 e il Butti, maestro dell'accademia di Brera, realizzò un'opera che oscillava tra sacro (presenza del crocifisso sul seno nudo) e profano (molto criticata la scelta del nudo all'epoca). Ma non è tutto, l'opera destò un certo scalpore, in quanto presentava e incarnava un'idea nuova della morte, vista come un sogno. Il letto è disposto all'interno di un giardino in una calma serata estiva e la giovane appare debilitata dalla malattia che la affligge senza speranza mentre si abbandona serena al sonno finale.
