Motta Sant' Anastasia è situato a circa 12 km da Catania, e si sviluppa su una rupe di origine basaltica, formatasi in epoca glaciale. Secondo un'antica leggenda puo' identificarsi come l'ombelico dell'Etna, la parte antica del paese si sviluppa su un neck, una rupe di origine vulcanica, Motta è l'unico esempio di neck presente in Italia, Fin dal periodo di Dionisio, tiranno di Siracusa, ricoprì un ruolo di notevole importanza come roccaforte di avvistamento e di difesa. Tale ruolo crebbe durante il periodo normanno con Ruggero I d'Altavilla che vi fece edificare una torre per presidiare l'imbocco della piana di Catania e proteggere così i possedimenti normanni dalle continue incursioni saracene.
