Il broccolo è un frattale, ossia la sua forma globale si ripete allo stesso modo su scale diverse. Quello che è più stupefacente è che il numero di rosette che compongono il broccolo è sempre un numero di Fibonacci. Ossia una cifra che fa parte dell'omonima successione, in cui ciascun numero è la somma dei due precedenti. La rappresentazione grafica della successione di Fibonacci è una spirale (detta appunto spirale di Fibonacci), riscontrabile anche nelle conchiglie, nei girasoli, nell'ananas, nel numero di petali di numerosi fiori, nella disposizione delle foglie sui rami. Dal centro del broccolo partono tante spirali di Fibonacci attorno alle quali sorgono le piccole cime. E lo stesso vale per le cime più piccole, dalle quali a loro volta partono tante spirali. Nessuno ha capito fino in fondo il motivo per cui la natura segua questa disposizione: forse per massimizzare l'esposizione ai raggi solari, ma come spiegare allora il ripetersi della successione di Fibonacci nel regno animale, nei minerali, nella chimica, nell'economia, nell'elettrotecnica, e perfino nell'arte e nella musica ?
