Il forte di Fenestrelle, eretto dal XVIII al XIX secolo, nell'omonimo paese, su progetto dell'ing. I. Bertola. Il progetto fu presentato su richiesta del re Vittorio Amedeo II, onde poter disporre di una fortezza in grado di contrastare l'ingresso di eserciti stranieri (segnatamente francesi). Il forte, opera colossale, si sviluppa sul crinale della montagna per una lunghezza di oltre tre chilometri e con una superficie complessiva di ben 1.350.000 mq e con un dislivello tra il primo e l'ultimo corpo di fabbrica di 600 metri! Il forte, iniziato nel 1728 e terminato nel 1850, è un complesso fortificato che conta otto opere difensive, collegate tra di loro da passaggi sia coperti che scoperti; opera caratteristica e unica nel suo genere è la "scala coperta" una lunghissima scalinata che conta ben 4.000 scalini, protetta da mura spesse due metri, che si arrampica sul pendio della montagna come una galleria lunga più di due chilometri!
