Three years ago, I rescued this crimson fronted parakeet from a person who had bought him from a poacher who stole him from a nest. He had spent his life in a small cage made for a canary and his wings were clipped. I made a large screened-in area above the chicken coop available for him to safely sleep each night and he was free during the day, spending much of the time on one of the ropes connecting his house to one of the understory trees in the chicken run. He called back to the flocks of crimson fronted parakeets that passed over him each morning and I assumed he would fly off with them once his wing feathers grew back. The only two words he knew were "Perico" and "Hola." After about seven or eight months, his feathers grew back and while he was able to fly, he really didn't want to, and he had no interest in leaving. So, he still sleeps safely above the chicken coop every night and spends his days scrambling along his network of ropes, climbing through the small trees or sitting on the fence, scolding the chickens below him or the people who pass by or calling for me to let him get on my shoulder.
