Cymothoa exigua è un crostaceo ectoparassita dei pesci ossei. L'adulto misura mediamente dai 3 ai 4 centimetri di lunghezza. Comunemente viene chiamato "pidocchio mangia lingua" a causa del suo parassitismo. Il parassita si posiziona all'interno del cavo orale dell'ospite penetrando attraverso le branchie. Aderisce alla lingua mediante appositi uncini e ne succhia il sangue causandone la necrosi. Il parassita si sostituisce dunque alla lingua dell'ospite collegando il proprio corpo alla muscolatura: il pesce parassitato utilizza il corpo del parassita come una lingua.
