La Abarth venne fondata a Torino nel 1949 dall'ingeniere italo tedesco Carlo Abarth e dal pilota Guido Scagliarini. L'azienda nacque per elaborare e potenziare vetture sportive e divenne nota per la produzione di elaborate marmitte per le automobili di diversi marchi fra cui Alfa Romeo, Fiat, Lancia, Porsche e Simca. Dal 2007 fa parte del Gruppo FCA. La Abarth 750 coupé è una delle versioni meno comuni delle vetturette sportive costruite partendo dalla base di una Fiat 600 di cui mantenne il telaio sottostante e su cui l'azienda milanese di Ugo Zagato costruì una carrozzeria da lui progettata. Venne assemblata in pochi esemplari tra il 1956 ed il 1959. Carlo Abarth ne elaborò i freni, le sospensioni e naturalmente il motore che passò dagli iniziali 633 a 747 cm3. Così su questo nuovo 4 cilindri la potenza passò dagli iniziali 21,5 cavalli della 600 di serie a 44 cavalli permettendo alla vettura di raggiungere una velocità di oltre 150 chilometri orari. Nel 1959 il motore subì un'ulteriore elaborazione diventando bialbero in testa ed erogando così 47 cavalli.
