Il chihuahua è una antichissima razza canina di piccole dimensioni. Il nome è dovuto alla capitale dell'omonimo Stato messicano in cui sono nati i suoi primi allevamenti, dove è conosciuto come chihuahueño. Uno dei dipinti più famosi raffiguranti il chihuahua è un affresco nella Cappella Sistina dipinto da Sandro Botticelli datato 1492. La storia del Chihuahua è ricca di misteri, infatti ci sono molte teorie che circondano la loro vera origine. Si dice che in antichità i Chihuahua fossero usati per rituali sacri da civiltà precolombiane. Aztechi e Maya furono fra i primi allevatori di una razza simile la cui orgine è quindi anteriore al quella civiltà. Nel 1904 la razza fu riconosciuta dall'American Kennel Club.
