KHIVA è l'antica capitale della Corasmia e del khanato di Khiva e ai giorni nostri è situata nella provincia uzbeka del Khorezm. L'Ichon-Qala (città vecchia dentro le mura) di Khiva è stato il primo sito in Uzbekistan ad essere iscritto tra i Patrimoni dell'umanità nel 1991. Anche se si hanno tracce della città intorno all'VIII secolo, allorché Khiva è citata come una piccola fortezza e un centro commerciale sulla Via della Seta le prime informazioni certe risalgono al XVI secolo, quando essa divenne capitale del Khanato di Khiva nel 1592. La sua storia è intessuta di lotte intestine fra le varie tribù uzbeke, di lotte con il vicino khanato di Bukhara, con la Persia e con la Russia e fu un fiorente mercato di schiavi fino a tutto il XIX secolo e anche un covo di feroci briganti .
