Così facendo riusce a fuggire dalla grotta dove era stato intrappolato con i suoi compagni. Il Ciclope, cieco e iracondo, scaglia contro le navi dei greci in fuga degli enormi massi che secondo la tradizione divennero le Isole dei Ciclopi[45]. Il III canto dell'Eneide di Publio Virgilio Marone racconta l'incontro dell'eroe troiano Enea con il compagno di Ulisse Achemenide, dimenticato dall'eroe greco nella terra dei Ciclopi durante la rocambolesca fuga.
