Su un colle maestoso emerge Castel Tirolo, il castello avito dei Conti di Tirolo (Conti della Val Venosta). Un castello che non solo diede il nome al vicino paese di Tirolo ma all'intera regione e che ne ìnfluenzò in modo significativo la sua storia. Il primo insediamento fortificato venne costruito già attorno al 1100. Il muro di cinta che risale a quel tempo è uno delle mura di cinta più antiche ancora esistenti. La seconda fase di costruzione - alla quale risale anche il mastio - è datata 1139/40 sotto i Conti di Tirolo, mentre la terza fase avenne sotto il conte Mainardo II di Tirolo nel XIII secolo.
