Non solo i bracconieri prendono di mira gli elefanti e i rinoceronti, ma anche gli avvoltoi avvelenando le carcasse dalle quali i volatili in questione si ciberebbero. Gli avvoltoi si trovano quindi in mezzo al fuoco incrociato della lotta tra rangers e bracconieri: banchettando sugli animali morti, gli avvoltoi attirano l'attenzione dei rangers che pattugliano i parchi e per evitare di essere individuati, i cacciatori di frodo iniettano veleni molto potenti nelle carcasse. Nel 2013 in Namibia sono stati uccisi tra i 400 e i 600 avvoltoi avvelenati, a maggio di quest'anno in Botswana ne sono stati ritrovati 92. Anche in Kenya si è registrata una riduzione degli avvoltoi pari al 50-60% negli ultimi tre decenni.
