L'ambiente paludoso,della Caldara, ciò che resta dell'attività tardiva del vulcanismo Sabatino (600.00-40.000 anni fa), è caratterizzato dalla presenza di una sorgente d'acqua mineralizzata, con emissioni d'idrogeno solforato, anidride carbonica ed altri gas. Si tratta di un paesaggio particolare, spesso usato come set cinematografico (es. scena iniziale di Attila, con Diego Abatantuono e, recententemente anche nel "Primo Re")
