Al Flaminio, c'è un angolo di città che è assolutamente unico: non assomiglia a nessun altro. Sembra di essere a Londra. della Capitale. Sono soltanto duecento metri di una strada privata, intitolata, a Bernardo Celentano (1835 - '63), pittore partenopeo dell'Ottocento ed esponente del Verismo. La genesi della sua strada England style spiega molto: siamo verso il 1910, ed era sindaco Ernesto Nathan, cosmopolita di vedute moderne e origine inglese, in carica dal 1907. Non soltanto vuole la prima area industriale dell'Urbe, sul Tevere; ma apre una nuova stagione dell'urbanizzazione nella Capitale, varando un piano regolatore che prevede anche quartieri fuori dalle Mura Aureliane, redatto da Edmondo Sanjust nel 1909. Questi edifici nascono per ospitare impiegati di buon livello e burocrati di uno Stato che si era insediato a Roma da neppure mezzo secolo. MORFOLOGIA Il luogo, pedonale e serrato, ai due estremi, da altrettanti cancelli, è giustamente chiamato la «Piccola Londra», e lo si raggiunge da via Flaminia 287, o da viale del Vignola. È composto da una serie di casette non elevate, con gli ingressi indipendenti, e sovente con portoncini posti in cima a sei scalini. Il tutto è abbastanza liberty: casette a schiera, come strette une alle altre; giardini; cancelli in ferro battuto, che separano le proprietà dai marciapiedi; portoncini in legno e decorati; normalmente, l'elevato è di tre piani; tante terrazze. Qui, decisamente, spira un'aria di altri tempi. E ovviamente, anche i prezzi ne tengono conto: oltre 10mila euro per metro quadrato; il taglio minimo, due locali con un bagno, vale mezzo milione, ma se ne possono spendere anche tre. L'AUTORE La «Little London» si deve a Quadrio Pirani (1878 - 1970), che ha firmato vari quartieri residenziali dell'Istituto delle Case popolari (San Saba, creato «a misura d'uomo», e Testaccio), nonché di quelli Di Palma nelle vie Giulietti, Ostiense e Campo Boario; altre case di cooperative fuori di Porta Latina, e dei complessi per impiegati statali nelle vie Chiana e Tagliamento: 350 villini per buona parte ormai demoliti, racconta Irene de Guttry. È il periodo in cui Roma si sviluppa anche per quartieri omogenei: come il Coppedè dal 1919; la Città-giardino Aniene, di Gustavo Giovannoni, nel 1920; e, ancora prima, i villini a Prati di vari architetti e ingegneri, «status symbol» di una buona borghesia.
