Cinquant'anni fa il deserto della Libia restituiva il relitto di un SIAI Marchetti S. 79 con i resti dell'equipaggio. La scoperta,fatta nel corso di ricerche petrolifere condotte dall'AGIP, ebbe grande eco in Italia e riaffiora periodicamente sulla stampa. Tutto prese origine dal ritrovamento dei resti di un aviatore il 21 luglio 1960, vicino alla pista Gialo-Giarabub. Questo, unito ad alcune precedenti segnalazioni di un aereo tra le dune, portò ad intensificare le ricerche, utilizzando anche un elicottero. Il 5 ottobre 1960 il trimotore venne infine ritrovato alla longitudine 23' 21' 50' e alla latitudine 28' 49'50'. Le ricerche permisero di identificare l'S.79 MM.23881 della 278a Squadriglia Aerosiluranti, decollato alle 17.25 del 21 aprile 1941 da Bengasi per un'azione contro la flotta inglese ma mai rientrato alla base. Perduta la via del ritorno, per motivi a tutt'oggi sconosciuti, effettuò un atterraggio di emergenza a circa 500 Km dalla base di partenza. La salma trovata a 90 Km dal relitto era dell'aviere Romanini, morto nel tentativo di dare l'allarme e portare soccorsi. Nessuno dei sei uomini si salvò. Solo il fortuito ritrovamento permise di accertare la fine dello sfortunato equipaggio e di seppellire i resti con gli onori militari . Ps. Questa immagine l'ho scattata all'interno del Museo Volandia dove è stata ricostruita la scena utilizzando la fusoliera del SIAI S.79 MM. , ach'esso appartenuto nel 1941 alla 278a Squadriglia.
