San Vito ha esercitato sin dalla mia infanzia un fascino particolare su di me. Si tratta di un Santo bambino la cui età all'epoca del martirio viene stimata sui 12-16 anni. è il Santo protettore di Polignano a Mare, le celebrazioni avvengono nell'arco di tre giorni ed è un susseguirsi fantastico di processioni via mare e via terra, Sante Messe, luminarie e fuochi d'artificio. Il momento più bello e emozionante è l'ascesa di San Vito sull'altare monumentale costruito per i tre giorni di festa nel piazzale antistante la chiesa. Era da tantissimi anni che non vedevo la festa. Quest'anno ho avuto la gioia e l'onore di averlo potuto fare e naturalmente ho effettuato moltissimi scatti di questi bellissimi momenti. Ve ne presento uno e spero che vi piaccia. San Vito Martire è uno dei 14 Santi ausiliatori.: San Vito tra storia e leggenda: San Vito nacque nel 286 a Mazara del Vallo in Sicilia, da una ricca famiglia del paese; suo padre Iles, pagano, rimasto vedovo, lo affidò ad una nutrice cristiana di nome Crescienzia, che d'accordo con suo marito Modesto fece battezzare il bambino ad insaputa di suo padre. Cresciuto nei principi della fede cristiana, ancora in tenera età fu restituito a suo padre, che si impegnò con anima e cuore perché suo figlio abbandonasse la fede, fino addirittura a denunciarlo al preside Valeriano che lo imprigionò e torturò nel tentativo di persuaderlo a venerare gli dei, ma senza ottenere alcun risultato. La fama di Vito e dei suoi poteri taumaturgici non tardò ad arrivare all'imperatore Diocleziano, che seppur persecutore dei cristiani, chiese aiuto al santo per liberare suo figlio dal demonio, affetto dalla Corea, anche nota come “ballo di San Vito”. Diocleziano una volta che ebbe usufruito dei poteri di Vito, anziché ricompensarlo, lo imprigionò e assieme a Modesto e Crescienzia, lo diede in pasto ai leoni, sopravvissuti furono immersi in una caldaia di piombo fuso e i tre ne uscirono miracolosamente ancora illesi. Ottennero la palma del martirio dopo essere stati sottoposti il 15 giugno del 299 alla “catasta”, tortura che macinava i corpi delle vittime. Ma come la tradizione di San Vito è giunta a Polignano? • Dopo il martirio,il fratello di una pia matrona, di nome si ammalò e addolorata chiese aiuto a Dio; apparsole in sogno San Vito, le disse che avrebbe guarito suo fratello se lei avesse seppellito lui, Modesto e Crescienzia nel “locus marianus”. che le rivelò trovarsi in Puglia, presso il Castrum Polymnianense. Organizzata la flotta, dopo 24 giorni di navigazione giunsero nel bellissimo porto dove la principessa ebbe cura di far costruire una chiesa in onore dei tre martiri e acquistati alcuni poderi in loco li donò ai frati benedettini perché potessero adorare per sempre i Santi Martiri. La Basilica vedi https://www.juzaphoto.com/galleria.php?l=it&t=2953984 nata nel 900 d.C. fu distrutta nel 1300 dagli ottomani e ricostruita quasi un secolo dopo dai veneziani, fu purtroppo nel 1866 fu venduta ai Marchesi La Greca, che ancora oggi sono proprietari dell'intero edificio, fatta esclusione per la chiesa, di proprietà del Fondo di Edifici di Culto del Ministero degli Interni e data in concessione alla Chiesa Matrice Santa Maria Assunta dove la domenica si celebra la messa.
