Campo Imperatore, Il vasto altopiano, definito dal noto alpinista Fosco Maraini, il “Piccolo Tibet”, si presenta come un paesaggio da vedere, da ascoltare e da osservare. Di origine glaciale e carsico-alluvionale, è uno degli altopiani più vasti d'Italia situato nel cuore del massiccio del Gran Sasso, all'interno del Parco Nazionale del Gran Sasso e Monti della Laga. A causa dell'alta quota e per l'opera di disboscamento dei secoli passati per favorire la crescita dei pascoli, presenta una vegetazione molto povera. È luogo di pascolo e refrigerio estivo per mandrie e greggi dei centri limitrofi come Castel del Monte, Calascio e Santo Stefano di Sessanio, nonché in passato luogo di riferimento per la pastorizia e la transumanza. L'altopiano è caratterizzato dalla presenza di laghetti a forma circolare di modesta profondità, la cui origine meteoritica per alcuni o meteorica e legata all'influenza dell'uomo per altri, spicca il Lago di Pietranzoni posto al centro dell'altopiano con ampia veduta alle spalle del Corno Grande.
