E per questa sua fama, nel 1765 venne nominata "città" dall'Imperatore Giuseppe II. Ogni anno, in luglio si vive un fine settimana fatto di rievocazioni storiche, visite ai palazzi, cortei, spettacoli per ricordare il passato illustre di questa città: appunto "Città di Velluto".
