"La cattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta a volte appellata di San Nicola il Pellegrino, è il principale luogo di culto cattolico della città di Trani, in Puglia.Si tratta di un esempio di architettura romanica pugliese. La sua costruzione è legata alle vicende di san Nicola Pellegrino, risalenti all'epoca della dominazione normanna: nacque in Grecia e dopo aver trascorso alcuni anni in solitudine giunse in Puglia trascorse l'intera vita con una croce in mano e ripetendo l'invocazione 'Kyrie Eleison'. Attirava e riuniva intorno a sé i ragazzi dando loro piccoli doni e facendo ripetere loro la sua invocazione. Dopo la sua morte fiorirono numerosi miracoli; quattro anni dopo nel 1098 nel Sinodo Romano, il vescovo di Trani si alzò e chiese all'Assemblea che il venerabile Nicola venisse iscritto nel catalogo dei Santi per i meriti avuti in vita e per i miracoli avvenuti post-mortem. Il papa Urbano II emanò un 'Breve' che autorizzava il vescovo di Trani ,dopo opportuna riflessione, ad agire come riteneva più opportuno. Il vescovo tornato a Trani lo canonizzò e dopo avere eretto una nuova basilica vi depositò il corpo del Santo. San Nicola Pellegrino è il santo patrono della città di Trani.
