Il Sacro Monte di Orta fu realizzato a partire dalla fine del Cinquecento per iniziativa dell'abate novarese Amico Canobio. La sua realizzazione venne affidata al padre cappuccino Cleto da Castelletto Ticino, che progettò alcune delle prime cappelle e curò quello che doveva essere il disegno del percorso devozionale nello splendido paesaggio naturale circostante.La chiesa dedicata a san Nicolao dovrebbe risalire al IX secolo. È citata la prima volta a metà del sec. XIII, come dipendenza della pieve di san Giulio all'Isola. L'edificio venne radicalmente trasformato e riprogettato tra il 1602 e il 1607 dall'architetto Cleto da Castelletto Ticino, e dedicato anche a san Francesco, in seguito alla fondazione del Sacro Monte di Orta (1591) dove è narrata la vita del santo d'Assisi. La chiesa sembrerebbe sia stata fondata dai monaci benedettini di Massino Visconti derivanti, a loro volta, dai monaci di San Gallo. L'attuale struttura architettonica si ispira alla basilica inferiore di San Francesco d'Assisi. Il pronao antistante la facciata fu aggiunto nel 1926. Internamente la chiesa è ricca di arredi lignei in stile barocco “francescano-cappuccino”, in noce con intarsi di radica incorniciata da legni scuri.
