La Chiesa parrocchiale di Santa Maria Assunta di Orta San Giulio si trova in cima alla "Salita della Motta", una strada in pietra e ciottoli fiancheggiata da magnifici palazzi storici. Da qui si gode, peraltro, di un panorama che abbraccia l'antico Borgo di Orta, l'Isola di San Giulio e la corona delle Alpi. La Chiesa parrocchiale di Santa Maria Assunta fu edificata nel 1485 e venne inizialmente dedicata alla Madonna della Consolazione per ringraziarla della liberazione dalla peste e sappiamo che nel 1560 era già una chiesa parrocchiale. Venne intitolata all'Assunta nel corso del XVIII secolo, quando venne ricostruita. La chiesa è a tre navate, divise da pilastri in granito. La facciata è una ricostruzione del '700 opera di Carlo Nigra, mentre il protiro risale al '600. Il portale p databile al XV secolo e fu realizzato in serpentino d'oira. All'interno si possono vedere dipinti del XVII e del XVIII secolo di Rossetti, Cantalupi e Orgiazzi e in una delle cappelle si trova un'importante opera del Procaccini: una tela che raffigura San Carlo Borromeo a Milano durante gli anni delle peste, che è un ottimo esempio della pittura lombarda del primo seicento.
