La donnola è un mustelide veramente piccolo, lunga poco meno di 30 cm. con coda molto corta. Anche il peso è esiguo e può variare dai 25 ai 250 gr. Questo perché il dimorfismo sessuale è molto accentuato, il maschio può essere anche di dimensioni doppie rispetto alla femmina. Ha un corpo agile e snello adatto alla caccia nelle tane più piccole come quelle dei roditori, coperto da un mantello a pelo corto di colore fulvo con il ventre, la gola e la punta delle zampe bianco/crema. Caratterialmente è molto coraggiosa attacca chiunque si avvicini troppo alla sua tana, anche l'uomo se necessario inoltre può espellere il contenuto delle ghiandole perianali con effetti simili a quelli della puzzola.
